Volume 1 lays bare how this world works: the upper tier stays clean by throwing things away, and everything discarded becomes hell for the tier beneath. Rudo endures slum discrimination but lives by treasuring objects, a habit taught by his adoptive father Regto. When Regto is murdered, Rudo is framed for the crime and dropped into the Pit without trial. He lands in a lower world ruled by discarded objects and monstrous Beasts. Enjin of the Cleaners saves him there, fighting with a Vital Instrument, a weapon born from an object loved long enough to gain a will of its own. Rudo awakens his own instrument from the gloves Regto left behind, gaining the power to give things life. His goal shifts from revenge to reclaiming the worth of everything and everyone thrown away.
